Program Note:
Drawing from both L. Frank Baum’s original The Wonderful Wizard of Oz (1900) and his 1902 stage adaptation, The Witches of Oz presents three scenes from the perspective of the two good witches Dorothy meets along her journey. The first, Locusta, the Witch of the North greets Dorothy upon her arrival in Munchkinland, directing her to the City of Emeralds for help returning home and promising to protect her from evil forces that may come her way. Dorothy eventually meets the Witch of the South, Glinda the Good, after traveling all the way to the City of Emeralds. It is then that Glinda tells Dorothy that the silver shoes she had been wearing could have brought her home to Kansas all along.
