clarinet choir (1 E-flat clarinet, 7 B-flat clarinets, 4 Bass clarinets)
Duration: 4 min 30 sec
University of South Florida Clarinet Ensemble
Asher Carlson, conductor
Program Note:
Greater than the Sum makes reference to the expression attributed to Aristotle: “The whole is greater than the sum of its parts.” In this piece, each clarinet part only presents fragments of melodic ideas. But through interconnection and interaction of each individual clarinet, melody arises as an emergent property of the ensemble. Greater than the Sum was written for Calvin Falwell and the University of South Florida Clarinet Ensemble to be presented at ClarinetFest® 2024 in Dublin, Ireland.
